Run Little Rabbit. Tuesday, June 18th 1445hrs

The law offices of Callahan, Murry, and Mudd were on the fifth floor of the historic India Building, located only a few blocks from City Hall. I raced there on foot, cutting across Congress Street and through Faneuil Hall before arriving in the lobby.

I bounced impatiently in the elevator, torn between trying to catch my breath and wishing the big metal box would ascend faster. When the doors finally slid open, I tumbled out into the hall, nearly crashing into a suited man who gasped and fell back, flattening himself against the wall and staring at me with wide eyes.

“Sorry,” I called breathlessly over my shoulder as I stumbled down the hall. The law offices had a dark plaque out front, their names spelled out in gold filigree. Pushing through the door, Tate Callahan stood dressed in his three-piece suit with his receptionist beside him. She was holding a clipboard up for his signature, marking where his initials were required.

The interior of the office was professional and tasteful, with modern artworks adorning the walls and chairs that someone might actually want to sit in. The view from the window peered down over Faneuil Hall and the south market, close enough that we could see the people coming and going.

“Ah, Sergeant Mayfield,” Callahan said without looking up. “I was wondering when you might turn up. You just missed your associate. He left about fifteen minutes ago.”

“Pongo?”

“Was that his name? Afraid I didn’t catch it. He tried to argue on your behalf, but given your absence and the fact that he is not actually a licensed attorney.” He shrugged. “I wouldn’t be too hard on him.”

“I take it there was no settlement agreement reached?”

“Naturally not, since you couldn’t even be bothered to attend. I’ve advised my client to proceed forward with civil litigation proceedings.”

“I was tied up. There’s been a murder. Not to mention an attack on the mayor.”

“So I heard. Tragic on both counts, but I don’t see how either is relevant to this case.”

“You might be surprised.” I drew in a long breath and exhaled, suddenly feeling very tired. “Why are you doing this?”

Callahan scribbled the last signature and handed the clipboard back to the receptionist, pausing to place his pen back in his lapel pocket before regarding me. “I’ve been retained by my client to file a lawsuit for damages.”

“And did your client bother to mention that she and her sister nearly burned down the entire neighborhood as a result of their little feud?”

“She informed me of the facts relative to the case. I’m not particularly interested in what nearly happened, Sergeant. Only in what did. Your action caused significant damage to two separate properties, inherently lowering the land value as well as the value of the structures themselves. I understand you believe what you did was justified, but I strongly doubt such unorthodox measures will resonate with a jury.” His face softened, and he took a step forward. For a moment he
